Can ChatGPT check if my website is down?
Only when you ask, and not reliably. With web search on, ChatGPT can try to open your site and tell you whether it loaded. If it can't, your site may still be fine: many sites and hosts block AI tools from visiting.
ChatGPT's scheduled tasks can recheck a page and notify you, but at most once an hour, and each visit can be blocked the same way. To hear within minutes, use a monitor that checks your site every few minutes. Connect the monitor to ChatGPT and it can answer "is my site up?" from real checks.

Checking once an hour
An hour is a long time to be down.
A scheduled task in ChatGPT looks at your site at most once an hour. A monitor like nimo looks every 5 minutes and double-checks before it alerts you.

Is it down, or is it just you?
Try these in order. Each takes under a minute. Click your result at each step and we'll tell you what it means.
Step 1 of 4
Open it on your phone with Wi-Fi off
If it loads on mobile data, the problem is probably your network, not your site.
If it loaded: Your site is probably fine
It works on mobile data, so the problem is likely your Wi-Fi or network. Restart your router, or try again in a few minutes.
Use a free "down for everyone" checker
Sites like Down For Everyone Or Just Me load your page from their own servers and tell you if it answers.
If up for everyone: It's up for other people
The problem is probably your device or browser. Try another browser, or clear this one's cache and reload.
Ask ChatGPT, but treat the answer as a hint
Turn on search and ask "Open https://yoursite.com and tell me if it loads." If it can't, check with one of the steps above before you panic.
Check your host's status page
If the site really is down for everyone, your hosting company or platform (Shopify, Wix, WordPress host) may already be reporting a problem.
If host reports a problem: Your host is on it
Follow their status page for updates. There's usually nothing to fix on your side, but you may want to let customers know.
If nothing reported: It's down, and the cause may be on your side
Contact your host or developer. Tell them when it started and any error message you see. A monitor records the exact time for you.
Blocked or out of date
Why ChatGPT can get it wrong
ChatGPT visits sites from OpenAI's servers. Firewalls, bot protection, and some hosts block those visits, so ChatGPT may report an error even when your customers can see the site.
It can also answer from search results instead of loading your page fresh. Search results can be hours or days old, so "looks fine to me" isn't proof that your site is up right now.
Claude, Gemini, and other assistants have similar limits. They help you work out what went wrong, but they aren't built to watch a site around the clock.
Give it real checks
How to get ChatGPT or Claude to actually know
Give them a monitor to read. A monitor checks your site every few minutes from the outside and keeps a record of when it went down and came back.
nimo checks that your site loads every 5 minutes, double-checks before it alerts you, and messages you in Slack or Telegram when it's down and again when it's back. It also checks how fast your key pages load: weekly on Pro, daily on Business. Connect nimo to ChatGPT or Claude and you can ask "is my site up?" or "why did my homepage get slower?" and get an answer from your site's checks.
Watching your site is part of nimo Pro: $20 a month for up to 10 sites. Checking a page once is free and needs no signup.
Common questions
Quick answers
Why does ChatGPT say my site is down when it works for me?
ChatGPT visits from OpenAI's servers, and many sites block those visits with bot protection or firewall rules. Check with a free "down for everyone" tool before assuming there's an outage.
Why does ChatGPT say my site is fine when customers can't reach it?
It may have answered from search results or an older copy of the page, or reached your site from a place your customers aren't. Only a check made right now, from outside your network, tells you whether it's up.
Can Claude check if my website is down?
The same way ChatGPT can: it can try to look up or open a page when you ask, but it doesn't watch your site or send alerts. Connect a monitor such as nimo to Claude to ask about your site's real status.
What's the cheapest way to get an alert when my site goes down?
Several monitors have free plans that check every 5 minutes and email you, such as UptimeRobot. Uptime Kuma is free if you run it yourself. See our list of UptimeRobot alternatives for what each one includes.
Can ChatGPT tell me why my site went down?
It can suggest likely causes if you paste the error message or describe what changed. With a monitor connected, it can also see when the problem started and whether the site is back.
Hear within minutes when your site goes down.
nimo checks your site every 5 minutes, tells you in Slack or Telegram, and answers your questions in ChatGPT or Claude.
